Tear Duct Surgery

Every day, our eyes are exposed to germs, dust and other particles that can cause damage. Tears work together with the eyelids and eyelashes to help protect the eyes. Tears keep the eyes lubricated and clean, while protecting them from infection.  In some cases, the tear drainage canal that drains tears from the eye into the nose may become permanently blocked. 

Blocked tear ducts can cause:

• Excessive and chronic tearing
• Discharge from the eye
• Crusting of the eye
• Infection of the tear sac

In order to treat blocked tear ducts, Dr. Michael McCracken can bypass the clogged tear duct by making a new tear drainage canal into the nose.  A small silicone tube is placed in the new tear duct for three months to keep it open. The procedure may be performed through a one centimeter incision in the skin or through the nose, without a skin incision.  The procedure takes about 30 minutes and is performed in the operating room with IV sedation or general anesthesia. Postoperative discomfort is minimal, and most patients can return to normal activities within a week. Makeup and contacts can usually be worn after a week.
